Russia’s Andrey Sobolev and Czech Republic’s Ester Ledecká won the respective men’s and women’s parallel giant slalom races as the International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Snowboard World Cup season begun today in Carezza in Italy.
Ledecká, the reigning world champion in the event, beat Germany's Ramona Theresia Hofmeister in the women's big final.
The 22-year-old's gold medal-winning performance comes on the back of her competing at the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cups in Lake Louise and St.Moritz earlier this month.
Her best result was a seventh-place finish in the second downhill event in Lake Louise.
"I had a great feeling the whole day," Ledecká, who finished first and second in Carezza in 2015 and 2016 respectively, said.
"I'm very happy that I was able to compete here although it was quite tough to switch from skiing to snowboarding.
"I didn't have so much time to really adjust, but obviously it was enough.
"I have to thank my team which did a great job again."
The small final saw Austria’s Ina Meschik, last year's winner in Carezza, cross the finish line ahead of Russia’s Alena Zavarzina to take the bronze medal.
In the men’s event, top qualifier Sobolev held off Switzerland's Nevin Galmarini to claim top honours.
The 2015 world champion’s victory comes on the back of runners-up finishes in Carezza in the past two years.
"Everything was perfect today," Sobolev said.
"The slope was ideal as usual.
"I'm very happy that I was finally able to win here after my second-place finishes in the last years.
"It's a good confidence boost going into the next two races in Cortina."
Switzerland’s Dario Caviezel rounded out the top three after defeating Russia’s Vic Wild, a double Olympic gold medallist at Sochi 2014, in the small final.
Caviezel’s third-place finish earned him a first career podium, five years after debuting on the tour in Carezza.
The FIS Alpine Snowboard World Cup tour is due to continue tomorrow with men’s and women’s parallel giant slaloms in Cortina d'Ampezzo.
Men's and women's parallel slaloms are also scheduled to be held in the Italian resort on Saturday (December 16).
