Japan's Akane Yamaguchi came back from a game and 5-0 down against India's PV Sindhu to win the women's singles title at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Super Series Finals at the Hamdan Sports Complex in Dubai.

The match was incredibly tight and lasted a gruelling one hour, 34 minutes before number one seed Yamaguchi came out on top to clinch the title.

Sixth seed Sindhu had taken the first game 21-15 and, after winning the last eight points of it, the momentum was certainly in her favour.

The Rio 2016 silver medallist used this momentum in the second game, helping her race into a 5-0 lead and making her the odds-on favourite for the title.

However, 2017 Asian Championship silver medallist Yamaguchi had other ideas and recovered to level the scores at 8-8 before eventually taking the game 21-12.

The third game was also an incredibly competitive affair with the lead changing hands on several occasions.

With the decider poised at 19-19, either player could have taken the match, but it was Yamaguchi who held her nerve to take the title by sealing the final two points.

Olympic silver medalist and reigining world champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark, who came into the tournament as the eighth seed despite being the defending champion, won the men's singles title, beating fourth seed Malaysian Lee Chong Wei in a tense final.

Lee, a three-time Olympic silver medallist, won the first game 21-19, but, like Yamaguchi earlier, Axelsen produced an excellent comeback to take the title.

There were a few nervy moments for the Dane in the second game as, after being 19-14 up, he allowed his opponent back into the game to level the score at 19-19.

However, Axelsen remained calm enough to win the next two points and take the match to a deciding game.

The 23-year-old then took this momentum into that final game, winning it 21-15 without ever falling behind.

Today's gold medal in Dubai was Axelsen's fourth of 2017 after wins at the India Open, the World Championships in Glasgow and the Japan Open.

The men's doubles final was a much simpler affair as tournament favourites Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo from Indonesia dispatched fourth seed pairing Liu Cheng and Zhang Nan of China in just 39 minutes to win a record seventh Super Series title.

The first game was close in the early stages with the Chinese duo holding the lead on a couple of occasions.

However, Gideon and Sukamuljo, who have now won their last three tournaments, never looked out of control, eventually running away with the first game 21-16.

The second game was even easier for the number one seeds as they came out on top by a 21-15 scoreline to clinch the title.

Number one seeds Shiho Tanaka and Koharu Yonemoto won the all-Japanese women's doubles final in similarly easy circumstances against Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota, who came into the tournament as second favourites.

The 2017 Denmark Open runners-up won 21-16, 21-15 and did not fall behind throughout the entire 56-minute match.

There were also no shocks in the mixed doubles final as first seed Chinese pairing Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen came out on top against Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong.

The first game was fairly routine for the 2017 World Championship silver medalists from China as they took it 21-15.

However, the final game was more testing for the Chinese duo, with their unfancied opponents always keeping within touching distance.

It had looked like it could go to a deciding game with the score at 20-20 but Siwei and Qingchen scored two consecutive points to take it 22-20, handing them the title.
