Speed skater Daniel Greig has been selected as the seventh member of the Australian team to compete at Pyeongchang in next year’s Winter Olympics as the countdown to the Games hits the 50-day mark.

The 26-year-old, who won a bronze medal at the International Skating Union World Sprint Speed Skating Championships 2014 in Nagano, Japan, will be Australia’s sole representative in speed skating in South Korea and will compete in the men’s 500 metre and 1,000m races.

Greig secured his place at the Games by recording an Australian record time in the B-Division at the fourth World Cup event in Salt Lake City earlier this month.

Commenting on his inclusion, Greig said: “It definitely makes me feel proud.

“I love representing Australia in every sports competition that I enter, and the Olympics is the pinnacle of that.

"I like to show people that anything is possible, even being an Olympic Speed Skater from Australia.”

Greig’s achievement is even more remarkable considering he has undergone two knee surgeries since Sochi 2014.

“I suppose having just recently broken my own personal best and national record I can officially say that I have bounced back,” he said.

“I can't argue that I have had a lot to contend with in my career so far, some of the setbacks you can clearly learn something valuable and others you just take on as ‘character building’.

“The thing I would consider a valuable piece of learning is that you can have success without perfection.

“I enjoy pushing the limits to be better in every way, I ultimately enjoy both the process of training and the thrill of competition.”

After a disappointing Sochi 2014 Games, where he finished 22nd  after a fall in his first 500m race, Greig hopes he will have a better experience in Pyeongchang.

“Above all I am hoping I can go to these Olympics and, now that I have a fairly good idea at what to expect, I hope I can make it a more pleasant experience for myself and enjoy the racing a bit more.

“My goal is to skate two races that I can be proud of, no matter what the outcome is.”

The 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics will take place from February 9 to 25.
