Former world champion Hermas Muvunyi has been granted permission to return to competition by the Rwanda National Paralympic Committee after he was banned for criticising the organisation.

Muvunyi, winner of the T46 800 metres at the 2013 International Paralympic Committee Athletics World Championships in Lyon, has not competed internationally since he publicly accused the governing body of doing little to support him after Rio 2016.

He was ordered to write a letter apologising and retracting the accusations in order for the ban to be lifted.

After a period of over a year where the 29-year-old did not compete, NPC Rwanda have now said that he has fulfilled their conditions and is allowed to represent the country again.

"We [NPC-Rwanda] convened this month and assessed his apology and after realizing that he had fulfilled what we had asked him, a decision was taken to allow him return to competition," the organisation's secretary general Dieudonné Mutangana told New Times Sport.

"This should serve as a lesson to other players so that they think about what to put in media before doing so."

Muvunyi, also the winner of two All-Africa Games gold medals, failed to secure a podium finish at Rio 2016 in either the 400m or 1500m.

He later vowed only to return to competition if there are "undamental changes to inspire Paralympic athletes in the country" - comments which provoked the suspension.

"I am happy for having been forgiven, now I must focus on working hard to regain my fitness before returning to competing at my best," he said after being informed that his ban had been lifted.
