The Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) has received a TTD3 million (£328,000/$445,000/€368,000) boost which will go towards its participation at three major Games.

The cash has been donated by the country's Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs.

It will help the island nation with its funding for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in April, the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla in August and the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games in September.

TTOC President Brian Lewis thanked the Ministry for its support following a presentation ceremony at Olympic House in capital Port of Spain.

"Given the harsh economic climate, it is important that the Government renews its commitment to the nation's athletes," he said.

"Not only is this a contribution to sport and those who have dedicated their lives to it, but it is also a demonstration of the value the Government places on the tangible and intangible benefits of participation in sport at the highest level."

The Commonwealth Games in Australia will be the country's immediate focus with Trinidad and Tobago looking to build on their three silver and five bronze medals at Glasgow 2014.

"We have always maintained our athlete-centered approach to sport administration and this contribution to the effort is no different," said Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Darryl Smith.

"TT's athletes have proven their worth time and again on the international stage and it is incumbent on the Government to provide the necessary support."
