Middle distance runner Joe Reid has been added to the Isle of Man team for this year's Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast after they were awarded an additional place for the event.

A total of 32 competitors were initially included in the Isle of Man's squad but the island was given an extra slot after other countries and territories scheduled to compete failed to take up their full quota.

Their team, unveiled in November and which will be spearheaded by cyclist Mark Cavendish, will now include Reid.

Reid, who will participate in the 800 metres, completes the Isle of Man's team for the Games, due to run from April 4 to 15.

"I'm extremely proud to be given the chance to represent the island on the biggest stage possible and can now finally begin to look forward to going head-to-head with some of the greatest athletes in the world," Reid told the BBC.

Cavendish, the 2011 world road race champion and winner of 30 stages of the Tour de France, is the headline name on the island's team for the event.

Peter Kennaugh will not compete, however, after the former Olympic, world and European champion cyclist revealed he had chosen to miss the Commonwealth Games to focus on his preparations for the Ardennes Classics in April.

"In September we were advised that not all countries taking part in the Games would be taking their full quota of athletes and some events were undersubscribed," Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association President Basil Bielich said.

"We applied for additional spaces and were delighted to learn that the Isle of Man has been awarded one extra place."

The Isle of Man fielded a team of 46 athletes at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
