Australia's Joany Badenhorst clinched snowboard cross gold in the women's lower limb two category on day one of the Para Snowboard World Cup Finals in Big White.

Badenhorst, who was set to become the first Australian female snowboarder to compete at a Winter Paralympics before pulling out of Sochi 2014 through injury, defeated Astrid Fina Paredes of Spain in her final to win the title.

As reported by SBS, after her victory, Badenhorst said: "All the riders were out in full force today, meaning competition was as tough as ever.

"But securing gold and having that a month out from the Paralympic Games is incredibly reassuring, and knowing that the hard work we put in is leading us the right way is fantastic."

Bronze was taken by Renske van Beek of The Netherlands.

The women's lower limb one category saw a United States one-two with Brenna Huckaby taking gold over Amy Purdy.

Home athlete Michelle Salt of Canada made sure it was not an all-American podium as she claimed bronze.

Italy's Jacopo Luchini collected bronze.

Mike Schultz, the clear favourite prior to the event, won the men's cross lower limb one title for the US with compatriot Mark Mann in second.

Tyler Burdick ensured a US clean sweep by finishing in the bronze medal position.

Gurimu Narita of Japan finished top of the pile in the men's cross lower limb two category in front of Alex Massie of Canada whilst Carl Murphy of New Zealand took bronze.

The competition continues tomorrow with the banked slalom events.

This event in Big White will be the final chance snowboarders have to prepare for the upcoming Winter Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang.
