The Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) have established a football league system for student athletes.

The league system has been arranged in two divisions in an attempt to reduce the travel time required for teams from their university to their opponent's.

It is hoped this will not impact upon the students' studies, while allowing them to take part in a competitive league format.

Universities have been split into north and south divisions, with around 14 weeks of competition to begin in July.

A play-off series will then be organised between the winners of the two divisions.

It will take place at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

The victors are expected to represent Nigeria at international university sports competitions.

Stephen Hamaphyelto, President of NUGA, claimed the league will help to offer student athletes a good balance between sport and academic study.

"We will always ensure the provision of sporting facilities as well as supervise and encourage organised school sports in Nigeria," he said, according to the International University Sports Federation.

It has been claimed that the first-ever league system in Nigerian university sport could prove influential for other sports.

Should it prove successful, further leagues could be introduced.
