France’s Christopher Patte won the men's title in the opening event of the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) World Cup season in Cairo - it was his first gold in what was his first competition for over a year.

The 27-year-old from Guernsey took the title ahead of his more favoured compatriot Valentin Belaud, the 2016 world champion, who had qualified third, five places ahead of him at the Platinum Club.

Patte had previously earned four UIPM World Cup medals, but this was the first time he had earned a place on the top of the podium.

Patte’s win completed a double for France following the women’s victory by Elodie Clouvel, the Olympic silver medallist, yesterday.

The bronze went to 27-year-old Pavel Ilyashenko of Kazakhstan, who had qualified in sixth place.

"It’s my first time to finish first in the world," said Patte.

"That was my best competition today so I’m very happy."

Patte added: "It’s my first competition coming back after one year.

"Training began in September and I am very ready.

"My fencing was very strong and my head was very strong all day.

"This year I want to go the World Championships with the France team and I want a medal."

Kirill Belyakov of Russia had led into the final laser run but dropped to fourth.

Belaud finished strongly and looked poised to win until the sharper eye of his colleague in the laser firing enabled a different French flourish.

The UIPM World Cup is due to conclude tomorrow with the mixed relay.
