Germany's Timo Boll will hope to live up to his world number one ranking when he begins his Qatar Open campaign tomorrow.

The competition features on the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Platinum World Tour, with action taking place at the Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiyah Arena.

Boll became the oldest men's world number one when the latest rankings came into force on March 1.

The 36-year-old is one of the 16 seeded men's players, who were assured of their places in the main draw of the competition.

The three-time Olympic medallist will face a qualifier in his opening match of the tournament tomorrow.

Should Boll progress, he could face competition at a later stage from China's Fan Zhendong, the world number two.

China's Lin Gaoyuan and Xu Xin, the world number three and four, will also expect to be in contention for victory.

China are also likely to enjoy success in the women’s event, with Zhu Yuling and Chen Meng among the favourites.

Singapore’s Feng Tianwei, along with the Japanese duo of Kasumi Ishikawa and Mima Ito, could pose threats to the Chinese pair.

Competition will run until Sunday (March 11).
