He clocked 1min 10.81sec to once again thwart home Belarus skater Ignat Golovatsiuk.

The local man was also second in the 500m and had to settle for silver again as he was timed at 1:10.88.

Russia's Danila Bobyr won bronze in 1:11.11.

"I'm over the moon," said Shinhama.

"As I managed to win two gold medals here in Minsk. 

"I suppose I reached this result thanks to my concentration and the fact that I left all my worries and doubts before the start."

Japan also claimed the women's 1,000m title as the 500m gold and silver medallists swapped places.

Rio Yamada won in 1:18.62 as her 500m champion team-mate Miku Asano was second in 1:19.25.

Bronze went to Andzelkia Wojcik of Poland in 1:20.40.

Long distance action also took place in Minsk on day three of competition.

The men's 10,000m title was won by Italy's Davide Ghiotto who added to his 5,000m success.

The Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympian came home in 13:16.69.

Compatriot Michele Malfatti, who was second in the 5,000m, finished in that position again in 13:36.12.

Hosts Belarus won another medal as Aliaksei Kirpichnik came third in 13:57.95.

The women's 5,000m gold went to Poland and Magdalena Czyszczon who stopped the watches at 7:32.82.

Dutchwoman Paulien Verhaar won silver in 7:33.95 after she had earlier claimed the same medal over 3,000m.

Bronze went to Gloria Malfatti of Italy in 7:34.48.
