The ancient Italian city of Verona will host the FIE Junior and Cadets World Championships starting tomorrow ©Verona2018

Davide Di Veroli, gold medallist in the men’s under-17 epee at the last Junior and Cadets World Fencing Championships in Plovdiv, will seek further success tomorrow as the event starts on the home ground of Verona.

Di Veroli is seeded sixth in the under-20 men’s epee due to get underway tomorrow, one behind Italian compatriot Valerio Cuomo, who helped earn a team gold in the under-20 men’s épée at last year’s World Championships in Bulgaria.

Italian fencers will be hoping to replicate the success they enjoyed in Plovdiv, where they won a total of 12 medals, including the two golds.

The event in Verona is due to take place at the headquarters of the Cattolica Sport society, located in the industrial are of the city.

More than 1,250 young athletes have converged for this International Fencing Federation (FIE) event due to take place until April 9.

Jakub Jurka of the Czech Republic is top seed in the men’s Under 20 epee, ahead of Russia’s Egor Guzhiev and Hungary’s Tibor Andrásfi .

Home fencers Federica Isola and Alessandra Bozza are the first and second seeds in the women’s event that will also be held on the opening day, with Romania’s Alexandra Predescu third seed, one above another Italian competitor, Beatrice Cagnin.

The Championships will start on Sunday with the men’s and women’s under-17 individual épée events.
