The International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) have paid tribute to former vice-president and Olympic silver medallist Corrado Dal Fabbro, who has died at the age of 72.

Before his roles in administration, Dal Fabbro competed for Italy at a national level and won a silver medal on home ice in the two-man event at the 1971 World Championships in Cervinia.

The highlight of his athletic career, however, was his performance at the 1972 Winter Olympic Games in Sapporo where he won a silver medal alongside Nevio De Zordo, Adriano Frassinelli and Gianni Bonichon in the four-man bobsleigh competition.

After his sporting career drew to a close, Dal Fabbro was elected vice-president of the IBSF, a role he held from 1992 to 2010 before he retired for health reasons.

He was also technical director of the Italian Winter Sports Federation where he oversaw the success of Gunter Huber and Antonio Tartaglia, winners of the two-man bobsleigh gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano.

IBSF President and International Olympic Committee member Ivo Ferriani paid tribute to Dal Fabbro in a statement on the IBSF website.

"It was with great sadness to hear of Corrado’s death – he was a mentor and a visionary in our sports," he said.

"His work leaves an undisputable heritage in the Federation’s history.

"Our thoughts are with his family and many, many friends all over the world.

"Grazie Corrado!"
