Diede de Groot has become the women's wheelchair tennis world number one for the first time in her career after winning the Cajun Classic in Baton Rouge.

The Dutch player progressed to a final against China’s Zhenzhen Zhu at the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour event.

The 21-year-old had lost to her opponent in all three of their previous meetings, but ended that particular record by winning 6-3, 6-2 in the final.

De Groot would also earn the doubles title alongside Britain’s Lucy Shuker, as they beat the all-Dutch pairing of Marjolein Buis and Aniek van Koot 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Britain’s Alfie Hewett emerged as the winner of the men’s singles event, earning his first Super Series title in the process.

He produced a strong display to beat Japan’s Shingo Kunieda 6-3, 7-6 in the final.

Kunieda would also end as the runner-up in the men’s doubles competition, along with Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez.

The duo fell to a 6-2, 6-4 defeat against French top seeds Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer.

Australia’s Dylan Alcott would seal titles in the quad events, with his first success being a 6-0, 6-2 singles win over Britain’s Andy Lapthorne.

He followed up the result by winning the doubles match with Heath Davidson.

They came from behind to beat Britain’s Antony Cotterill and Lapthorne by a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 scoreline.
