Swimming Canada has announced the appointment of Australian Wayne Lomas to head its Paralympic programme.

Lomas joins the organisation as associate high performance director and a national Para-swimming coach.

He was most recently executive manager - high performance at Swimming Australia, serving as the leader of the team which competed at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Under his leadership, Australia won 10 medals, three of which were gold.

Lomas was also responsible for the Paralympic swimming team that claimed 29 medals, including nine gold, at Rio 2016 to finish fifth overall. 

He also oversaw the development of the organisation’s 2017-2020 strategic high performance plan.

Lomas is due to officially take up his new role with Swimming Canada on June 1.

The Australian will be tasked with leading all aspects of the Paralympic programme and will also and serve as team leader for all major international Para-swimming teams.

"Canada has a proud swimming heritage that I am excited at the chance to contribute to," said Lomas. 

"Canadian Para-swimming also has a strong history, with stars like Aurelie Rivard building on the legacy of champions such as Benoit Huot and others. 

"I am looking forward to being part of something very exciting that is happening in Canada.

"It’s a great honour and privilege to take on such a critical role at such an exciting time, both for Swimming Canada, and more specifically, for Para swimming.

"Internationally, Para-swimming is increasing in profile and professionalism - and I hope that my experience can help Canadian swimmers and their coaches on the journey to Tokyo [2020], Paris ]2024] and beyond."

Canada finished 11th on the swimming medals table at Rio 2016 with a total of eight medals, four of them gold. 

Swimming Canada chief executive Ahmed El-Awad claimed the appointment of Lomas would help maintain the country's status as one of the best Para-swimming nations in the world.

"We are looking forward to Wayne joining our team," he said.

"Wayne’s vision and leadership will be a great complement to the great coaches, athletes and staff in our system."
