The Iranian team that finished top of the medals table at the 2018 World Junior Taekwondo Championships have been congratulated by the country's President Hassan Rouhani.

The team won seven gold and two bronze medals at the Championships in Hammamet in Tunisia which took place between April 9 and 13. 

Hossein Lotfi, Amir Valipour, Amir Sina Bakhtiari, Hamed Asghari, Mohammad Mehdi Emadi, Ali Eshkevarian and Mohammad Ali Khosravi won the seven gold medals while Erfan Moradi and Nima Mehr Ali claimed a bronze each.

As reported by the Islamic Republic News Agency, a message on the official Presidential Office website said: "The President underlined that such prideful shining, hoisting of the Iranian flag and playing of the national anthem across the world sent a wave of joy and hope to every Iranian house and heralded conquering more peaks in the future.

"The crushing victory of the Iranian junior taekwondo team in World Championships in Tunisia made every Iranian happy, especially the dear youths of the Islamic homeland."

The President himself added: "I congratulate the dear nation of Iran on the valuable victory and appreciate the coaches and industrious taekwondo fighters."

He then wished success for all Iranian athletes in the future.

The event was attended by 950 athletes from 118 countries.

Behind Iran were South Korea, who claimed one gold, one silver and two bronze medals, and Turkey,winner of one gold and two silver medals.
