Double world champion Francesco Battella is doubling as competing athlete and head of the Organising Committee for the World Para Swimming World Series-leg starting tomorrow in the Italian city of Lignano Sabbiadoro.

The 29-year-old is a two-time Paralympic medallist in the S1 class and will compete alongside his administrative role.

“It is a great challenge as this time the event is not going to be ‘just’ the National Championships but one of the six World Series," Battella said.

"I do not deny that I feel an incredible responsibility on my shoulders.

"My staff is very competent.

"The organisation has worked day after day, studying every detail and taking one step at a time, setting in motion a great structure."

A total of 216 swimmers representing 31 nations are entered to compete at the four-day event.

Monica Boggioni is among other members of a strong Italian team.

Boggioni broke three world records at last year’s World Series finale in Berlin to take the women's overall title.

She then claimed six medals, including three golds, at the World Championships in Mexico City.

Federico Morlacchi, who won seven medals at last year’s World Championships, and Carlotta Gilli, who won six medals, are other members of a 50-strong home contingent.

Sheffield and Berlin are due to host the final two legs of the World Series over the next three weeks.
