France's Yannick Borel claimed his second International Fencing Federation (FIE) Épée Grand Prix title after winning the men’s event in Cali today.

The 13th-ranked competitor beat South Korea's Jung Byeungchan 15-10 in the final at the Colombian’s city’s Pacific Valley Events Centre.

He earlier defeated another South Korean, the Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallist Park Sangyoung, 15-14 in the semi-finals.

Jung, whose second-placed finish was the best of his career, overcame France’s Daniel Jerent 15-11 in the other last-four encounter. 

Park and Jerent were the bronze medallists.

Jerent narrowly beat second-ranked Ukrainian Bogdan Nikishin in the quarter-finals 15-14, while Borel eliminated fourth-ranked Swiss Max Heinzer in the same round, triumphing 15-9.

Reigning Olympic champion Emese Szász-Kovács of Hungary won the women’s competition, securing her fifth FIE Épée Grand Prix gold medal.

She also prevailed at last year’s equivalent event in Bogotá.

Szász-Kovács faced the United States’ Courtney Hurley in the final, winning 15-11.

In the semi-finals, Hurley beat France’s Auriane Mallo 15-9, while Szász-Kovács defeated Italy’s Federica Isola 15-10.

The bronze medals went to Mallo and Isola, whose third-place finish was her best ever.

More than 230 fencers participated in the Grand Prix, which was the last one of the nine-city series for the 2017-2018 season.
