The event will be held from August 7 to 12 as part of the multi-sport European Championships being held across Glasgow and Berlin.

A 50/50 split of men and women will compete for equal prize money in separate male and female Team Match Play Championships.

They will then join together for an 18-hole foursomes strokeplay Mixed Team Championship.

Teams will consist of two male and two female players, with a maximum of three teams representing any one nation in each event.

Lawrie, the former Open champion and two-time Ryder Cup player, and Booth, a two-time winner on the Ladies European Tour and former Curtis Cup player, are both ambassadors for the event.

They have each now featured in special videos promoting the new format.

"It is a hugely innovative and exciting format and will provide an historic moment for equality in sport with men and women competing together in the mixed team event," Lawrie said.

A major challenge for the competition is that it will clash with the final major of the season, the PGA (Professional Golfers' Association) Championships due to be held from August 9 to 12 at Bellerive Country Club.

Lawrie, however, claimed that many of top players will still attend.

Qualification for the Championships will be via the European Golf Team Championships points tables for men and women based on respective world rankings points.

"In golf we rarely get the opportunity to play as part of a team, particularly when you turn professional so it would be a great honour to represent your country in such a ground-breaking event," added Booth.

The new European Championships, which are due to take place every four years, will combine the existing European Championships of aquatics, athletics, cycling, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon.
