Rodrigo Gonzalez claimed gold in front of a home crowd at the International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Cup in Huatulco.

The Mexican featured in a packed men’s field at the seventh World Cup competition of the season.

He was part of the leading group on the sprint distance 750 metre run and 20 kilometre bike courses.

Gonzalez produced a fast transition to head out onto the run course in first place, where he would remain for the full 5km.

The Mexican runner would edge further clear of his rivals, despite the best efforts of Brazil’s Manoel Messias.

The home athlete would cross the line in a winning time of 55min 32sec.

“I am really happy, I was thinking in the morning when I woke up that this was my first World Cup back in 2008 and actually I was lapped at that time,” said Gonzalez.

“So it is really exciting to back ten years after and win this race, because it was a race I could not win before and I am excited to win in front of a home crowd.”

Messias would have to settle for ending as the runner-up behind the Mexican, as he crossed 13 seconds down.

He was joined on the podium by his fellow Brazilian Diogo Sclebin, who finished in a time of 55:51.

The United States’ Chelsea Sodaro earned a maiden World Cup victory in the women’s race, after pulling away in the final stages of the run.

She battled with New Zealand’s Deborah Lynch and Brazil’s Beatriz Neres early in the run, but left her opponents behind in the final two kilometres.

Sodaro finished the event in a winning time of 1 hour, 1min, 14 sec, with Lynch eventually ending 25 seconds down in second place.

The podium was rounded off by Neres, who finished in 1:01.41.
