The United States dominated the opening day of the 2018 Pan American Karate Federation (PKF) Senior Championships in Santiago, winning three of the five kumite gold medals on offer at the Polideportivo del Estadio Nacional.

In men’s competition, Thomas Scott and Brian Irr won the respective under-75 kilograms and over-84kg events.

Scott beat Venezuela’s Jhosed Ortuño 7-2 in his final, while Irr defeated Chile’s Rodrigo Rojas 4-2 in his to the disappointment of the home crowd. 

The under-75kg bronze medallists were Colombia’s Juan Landazuri and Chile’s Matias Rodriguez Fuentes.

Cuba’s Lazaro Jordan Chapman Mora and Canada’s Daniel Gaysinsky rounded out the over-84kg podium.

There was also success for the US today in the women’s kumite under-61kg event, which was won by Joane Orbon. 

She overcame Peru’s Alexandra Vanessa Grande Risco 4-0 in the final. 

Ecuador’s Jacqueline Factos and Brazil’s Stephani de Lima came away with the bronze medals.

Among today’s other kumite winners was Canada’s Maxym-Olivier Rivest, who topped the men’s under-84kg podium by beating Brazil’s Kaique Rodrigues 4-0 in the final.

The bronze medals went to Venezuela’s Freddy Valera and Colombia’s Ruben Dario Henao Amu.

In the women’s under-68kg final, Cuba’s Cirelys Martinez Leon was given the edge on Mexico’s Sachiko Paulina Ramos Akita after a 2-2 draw.

The US’s Cheryl Murphy and Canada’s Melissa Bratic were the bronze medallists.

Peru claimed the men’s and women’s team kata titles at the expense of Brazil.

They won both finals 5-0.

Colombia were bronze medallists in both events.

They shared third place with Argentina in the men’s competition and Mexico in the women’s competition.

Action in Chile’s capital is due to continue tomorrow.

The event marks the 32nd edition of the PKF Senior Championships.
