The United States beat Serbia today to secure first place in Group B at the International Basketball Federation Under-17 World Cup in Argentina.

The four-time defending champions made it three wins out of three with a 93-61 victory at the Union Athletic Club in Santa Fe.

Romeo Jajuan Weems was their top performer, amassing six points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Awaiting the US in the round of 16 are the Dominican Republic, who finished bottom of Group A following their 95-62 loss to 2016 finalists Turkey.

Today’s other match in Group B saw Mali defeat China 83-71 to ensure a third-place finish.

In Group C, Montenegro clinched the runners-up spot with a 77-67 overtime victory against Egypt.

Captain Jovan Kljajic nailed a three-pointer with 1.5 seconds left to force the first overtime session of the tournament.

He then took over in the extra frame, managing seven of his 15 points, including a sequence in which he scored a lay-up, stole a ball and converted a lay-up and bonus free throw, and then blocked an Egyptian shot.

"It was incredible," Kljajic said.

"It proves that in this sport you can never give up.

"After this we have more confidence, a lot more confidence."

Canada topped Group C after overcoming New Zealand 97-61 to remain unbeaten.

Despite losing 68-66 to Australia today, Puerto Rico beat their opponents to first position in Group A.

They both ended up on five points along with Turkey, who had to settle for third place.

In Group D, France claimed a 79-51 win over Croatia to finish first with an unblemished record.

Croatia took second spot ahead of Argentina, who defeated The Philippines 74-71.  

As well as the US' meeting with the Domincan Republic, tomorrow’s round of 16 will also see Puerto Rico face China, Montenegro go up against Argentina and Turkey do battle with Serbia.

The other contests are between New Zealand and France, Australia and Mali, Canada and the Phillppines, and Egypt and Croatia.
