United States' Dane Jackson began his recovery from a disappointing defeat at the International Canoe Federation Canoe Freestyle World Cup in Sort with a preliminary round victory today.

Jackson was surprisingly beaten into second place by Poland's Tomasz Czaplicki in the men's K1 event yesterday.

Today marked the start of a second successive World Cup leg in the Spanish city.

Jackson achieved the best qualifying score of 1903.34 points.

Czaplicki finished second today with 1,690.

Sebastian Devred of France was third with 1,510.

Women's K1 heats are due to take place tomorrow.

Finals are due to take place on Saturday (July 7).
