Russia’s Iurii Busse and Ukraine's Anastasia Bachynska won the respective boys' and girls' competitions at the Buenos Aires 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) qualification event for gymnastics in Baku.

The event, held at the Azerbaijani capital's National Gymnastics Arena, provided the only chance for Europe's junior gymnasts to secure a ticket for their country to the third edition of the Summer YOG.

Bachynska cruised to victory in the girls' event with the top score in the beam exercise and the third score in the vault and floor.

With a total of 54.299 points, she had a margin of more than a point over silver medallist Carolann Heduit of France and third-placed Daria Belousova of Russia.

Heduit managed 53.266 points, while Belousova posted 53.066.

European Youth Olympic Festival champion Ksenia Klimenko was the best in both the bars and floor, but a disastrous beam exercise for the Russian, scoring only 9.700 points, dropped her to seventh place in the all-around.

Talented Italian Asia D'Amato registered the top score on the vault and finished fourth in the all-around with 52.832 points.

In the boys' competition, Busse and fellow Russian Sergey Naidin went head-to-head, posting top-three scores on five and four apparatus respectively.

Busse proved to be the most consistent with his all-around score of 80.731 points beating Naidin’s by 0.434.

Third place went to Hungary’s Krisztian Balasz with 79.332 points.

He finished 0.401 points ahead of Great Britain's Adam Tobin.

A total of 54 boys and 43 girls competed in Baku.

The first 17 girls, with a limit of one per country, secure participation for their country at Buenos Aires 2018.

For the boys, the top 16 made it, as Iceland got allocated a spot by the International Olympic Committee’s Tripartite Commission.

Buenos Aires 2018 is due to take place from October 6 to 18.

Gymnastics competition is scheduled to be held at the Parque Polideportivo Roca from October 7 to 16.
