Australia and New Zealand secured places at the Buenos Aires 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games archery tournament after winning qualifiers in New Caledonia.

The qualifier was held on the final day of the World Archery Oceania Championships in Paita.

Rebecca Jones secured the female quota place for New Zealand, after a battle with her team-mate Olivia Sloan.

The outcome was eventually decided in a shoot-off.

Australia had already secured a female place at the Games, but they earned a male spot today.

Jason Hurnall overcame New Zealand’s Finn Matheson in the qualifier to claim the place.

Teams from Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea were aiming to earn spots.

Competition was organised by the French Archery Federation as New Caledonia is a territory of the European country.

It meant home archers - as well as those from Tahiti - would not be able to qualify for Buenos Aires 2018 as they would need to represent France at the Youth Olympics.

The Games are scheduled to take place between October 6 and 18 in Argentina’s capital city.
