Held every four years, the multi-sport event welcomes teams from the Micronesia region.

Yap are one of four states from the Federated States of Micronesia which takes part - alongside Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae.

Teams will also travel from Marshall Islands, Palau, Kiribati, Northern Mariana Islands and Guam.

However, Nauru have been forced to withdraw due to financial concerns.

The sports on the programme include men's baseball, basketball, volleyball, beach volleyball, football, athletics, table tennis and weightlifting.

Wrestling, va'a canoe and open water swimming also feature, alongside the traditional Pacific island sports of spearfishing and the "Micro All Around".

The All Around contains a swim/dive/run event, spear throwing, coconut tree climbing and coconut husking and grating.

After tomorrow's Opening Ceremony, sport will continue until July 27.

"The Micronesian Games are part of our regional identity," said Bill Keldermans, President of the Micronesian Games Council.

"It is one of the only times when all Micronesians come together in the spirit of positive competition and friendship.

"The youth competing here will become the leaders of tomorrow."

Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC) President Robin Mitchell has provided his full support.

"The Olympic Family from the International Olympic Committee, ONOC and International Federations are providing support to the Organising Committee through the funding of technical officials, funding doping control and educational programmes," he said.
