Italy's Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo were eliminated from the European Beach Volleyball Championships in The Netherlands today as their hopes of securing a fourth men's title in five years came to an end.

The defending champions lost 19-21, 23-21, 12-15 against 13th seeds Adrian Heidrich and Mirco Gerson in the round-of-24.

Defeat, which came in front of the famous passenger ship SS Rotterdam on the Katendrechtse Hoofd, marked the conclusion of an extremely disappointing campaign for Nicolai and Lupo, who also suffered losses in two of their three Pool A matches.

Victory for Switzerland's Heidrich and Gerson sets up a round-of-16 clash with Pool F winners Oleg Stoyanovskiy and Igor Velichko of Russia.

Second seeds Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen are one of two pairings already through to the quarter-finals after they beat France’s Youssef Krou and Quincy Aye 24-22, 21-15.

Krou and Aye had earlier registered a surprise 25-27, 21-15, 15-9 win over third seeds Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst of Austria.

Awaiting Brouwer and Meeuwsen in the last eight are Latvia’s Janis Smedins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs, who defeated Poland’s Mariusz Prudel and Jakub Szalankiewicz 21-19, 21-18 in the round of 16.

Among the other duos progressing through to the round-of-16 today were Poland’s Grzegorz Fijalek and Michal Bryl thanks to their 21-12, 21-12 victory over Turkey’s Murat Giginoglu and Volkan Gögtepe.

They will be joined by the likes of Latvia’s Martins Plavins and Edgars Tocs, 21-14, 21-14 victors at the expense of Russia’s Maxim Sivolap and Artem Yarzutkin, and The Netherlands' Christiaan Varenhorst and Jasper Bouter, 21-15, 19-21, 15-13 winners over Germany’s Philipp Arne Bergmann and Yannick Harms.

The six remaining round-of-16 ties are due to take place tomorrow along with the quarter-final matches.

The top seeds in the women’s event were also ousted today as Germany’s Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude lost 23-21, 20-22, 10-15 to 17th seeds Liliana Fernández Steiner and Elsa Baquerizo McMillan in their quarter-final in Apeldoorn.

The Spanish pair's reward is a last-four encounter with fifth seeds Nina Betschart and Tanja Hüberli of Switzerland.

Betschart and Hüberli defeated another German duo, fourth seeds Victoria Bieneck and Isabel Schneider, 18-21, 21-11, 15-12 today.

Second seeds Barbora Hermannová and Marketa Slukova of Czech Republic are safely through to the penultimate round having overcome Russia’s Evgenia Ukolova and Ekaterina Birlova 21-13, 21-17.

They will next face The Netherlands’ Sanne Keizer and Madelein Meppelink, 21-10, 21-17 victors against Spain’s Angela Lobato Herrero and Amaranta Fernández Navarro.

The women’s semi-finals and medal matches are scheduled for tomorrow.
