South Korea and Japan claimed an East Asian double today at the International Federation of University Sport (FISU) World Handball Championships in Croatia.

South Korea proved too strong for hosts Croatia in a topsy-turvy men's battle at the University of Rijeka.

The Croats were always in contention but their opponents always had a little bit more and held on to triumph 36-31.

Japan beat Portugal 29-24 to seal the men's bronze medal.

Egypt got the better of Czech Republic 34-28 in the contest to decide fifth place.

Japan overcame Brazil 27-19 in the women's final at the University of Rijeka.

South Korea then battled hard before defeating Poland 22-19 in the women's bronze medal match.
