Maisie Summers-Newton of Britain clocked a world record time on her way to clinching the gold medal in the women's individual medley SM6 race at the European Para Swimming Championships in Dublin.

The 16-year-old sensation touched the wall in a blistering 2min 59.60sec to secure the European title at the National Aquatic Centre in the Irish capital.

Summers-Newton's time saw her break a world record previously held by compatriot and multiple Paralympic champion Ellie Simmonds.

Yelyzaveta Mereshko of Ukraine, winner of the 50 metres freestyle S6 final yesterday, could only watch as the Briton stormed ahead of the rest of the field, settling for silver behind the youngster in 3:01.69

The bronze medal was claimed by Verena Schott of Germany, who clocked 3:05.39.

Summers-Newton's team-mate Thomas Hamer, a Paralympic silver medallist, also broke a world record as he claimed gold in the men's 200m freestyle S14 event.

Hamer proved too strong for the rest of the field as he touched the wall in 1:55.71 to lead a British one-two as compatriot Jordan Catchpole took silver.

Michiel Jorink of The Netherlands clinched bronze.

The other world record to fall on day two came in the mixed 4x50m relay 20 points event as Ukraine produced a dominant performance to win the race in 2:39.29.

Ukraine were a class above their rivals as Italy took silver, over nine seconds back, while bronze went to the team from Spain.

The event in Dublin continues tomorrow.
