America’s multiple world and Olympic medallist Brady “The Arizona Cowboy” Ellison fell off his horse today at the Pan American Archery Championships in Colombia.

Ellison, who holds the record for the longest continuous period as the world’s number one-ranked recurve archer, from August 2011 to August 2013, had finished top of the qualifying with 692 points to earn top seeding in the individual event.

But after winning his opening match against Ecuador’s Jose Alvarez 6-2, he was beaten 6-4 in his third round meeting with Guatemala’s Thomas Flossbach at the Campo tiro con arco in Medellin.

Canada’s Crispin Duenas, who was seeded second after finishing behind the US archer in qualifying with 676, made it all the way through to the gold medal match, where he will meet Mexico's Ernesto Boardman.

Jack Williams of the United States won the bronze medal match 7-3 against Mexico’s third-seeded Luis Antonio Alvarez Murillo.

Mexico’s Alejandra Valencia and Mackenzie Brown of the United States will meet in the women’s recurve gold match tomorrow afternoon.

Bronze was claimed by the fellow American archer whom Brown beat 6-0 in the semi-final, La Nola Shepherd, who earned a 6-2 win over Mexico’s Ana Paula Vazquez.

The latter player was beaten 7-1 by her fellow countrywoman in their semi-final.

The 23-year-old Valencia, who competed at the London 2012 Games as a 17-year-old and lost the bronze medal match at the Rio 2016 Games, won world silver with Mexico at their home Championships last year.

She earned top seeding with a score of 660 in qualifying, with Brown third on 650.

Second seed Aida Roman of Mexico, who scored 653, was beaten 6-2 by Canada’s Virginie Chenier in her second match.

Athletes competing at the event in the Colombian city have the first chance to qualify for next year's Pan American Games in Lima.

The Pan American Championships is a key event on the path to Lima 2019 as it is one of only two qualifying competitions for next year's Games.
