Serbia’s Novak Djokovic is one match away from becoming the first player to win  Association of Tennis Professionals Masters 1000 events after reaching the final of the Cincinnati Masters.

The tournament has proved the only elusive Masters 1000 competition out of the nine for the Wimbledon champion having finished as the runner-up on five occasions.

He reached the final for the sixth time in his career, overcoming Croatia’s Marin Cilic at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.

Djokovic claimed the opening set 6-4, only for Cilic to win the second 3-6 to take the match into a decider.

Momentum was wrestled back by Djokovic in the final set, the Serbian securing a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory.

He is now set to face the challenge of Roger Federer after the Swiss star progressed from his semi-final against David Goffin.

Federer won the first set on a tie-break before his Belgian opponent withdrew from the match with injury when the scores were at 1-1 in the second.

Victory in the final would see Federer earn a 99th title of a glittering career.

World number one Simona Halep reached the women’s final by earning a straight sets victory against Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka.

The Romanian was in impressive form throughout the contest to beat her opponent 6-3, 6-4.

Halep will hope to add to the Rogers Cup title she earned last week when she faces The Netherlands’ Kiki Bertens in the final.

Bertens came from a set down to beat the Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in her semi-final at the Women's Tennis Association Premier 5 category event.
