Pratul Joshi was the first home player to make an impact on the men's singles competition as the inaugural Badminton World Federation Hyderabad Open got underway today.

Joshi beat Singapore's Zin Ng 24-22, 22-20 to earn a round two match against fellow countryman Aryamann Tandon, who received a bye from the first round in this World Tour Super 100 event at the GMC Balayogi Sata Indoor Stadium.

Running until Sunday (September 9), the event  has attracted a huge gathering of 435 players, carrying total prize money of $75,000 (£58,000/€64,500).

India’s fifth seed Sourabh Verma will play his second round match against South Korea’s Lee Yun Gyu, who won his first round match against home player Kartik Jindal 21-15, 21-14.

India's Siddarth Singh and Arintap Das Gupta will be first players on tomorrow as they meet in the men's singles first round, with the winner meeting home top seed Sameer Verma, who has had a bye to the second round.

RMV Gurusaidutt was another home winner in the men’s singles, coming through his first round against Indonesia’s Gatira Cupu 13-21, 21-18, 21-18 to meet Israeli third seed Misha Zilberman.

Malaysia's Giap Goh beat home player Siddharath Thakur 22-20, 19-21, 21-18 to earn a second round match against sixth seed Panji Maulana of Indonesia.

Maulana's compatriot Vicky Saputra beat India's Ajay Jayaram 21-19, 21-17 and now meets home fourth seed Kashyap Parupalli, while another Indonesian, Chico Wardoyo, also beat home opposition in the form of Adrian George, 21-10, 21-12, to earn a second round match against India's second seed, B Sai Praneeth.

Meanwhile, four women came through qualifying to earn a place in the women’s singles main draw first round that starts tomorrow - two home players, Simran Singhi and Aakarshi Kashyap, South Korea’s Se Young An, and Choirunnisa Choirunnisa of Indonesia.
