Top seed and local player Sameer Verma got into action at the inaugural Badminton World Federation Hyderabad Open today as he beat fellow Indian Arintap Das Gupta.

Verma, world ranked 21, recorded a 21-16, 21-1 win at the GMC Balayogi Sata Indoor Stadium.

He will now meet another compatriot in the third round in Kevin Walter, who registered a 21-10, 21-11 win over another of India’s big contingent at this event, Munawar Mohammed.

But on the other side of the draw there was a shock defeat for India’s second seed, B Sai Praneeth, who lost his first men’s singles match 21-13, 20-22, 12-21 to Indonesia’s Chico Dwi Wardoyo.

The Indonesian will next meet Malaysia’s Joo Soong, who defeated India’s Mithun Manjunath 21-13, 21-18 in the second round.

The top seed’s brother, Sourabh, seeded five, also reached the third round with a 21-12, 22-20 win over South Korea’s Yun Gyu-lee and now meets fellow Indian Pratul Joshi, who defeated compatriot Aryamann Tandon 16-21, 21-15, 21-16.

Another all-Indian third round will see RMV Gurusaidatt - who earned a 21-11, 21-14 win over Israel’s third seed Misha Zilberman - play Daniel Farid.

Giap Chin Goh and Lim Chi Wing will contest an all Malaysian third round match, while India’s Chirag Sen will meet Indonesia’s Firman Kholik, and another Indian player, Kaushal Dharmamer will play Indonesia’s Vicky Saputra.

In the women’s competition, Indonesia’s top seed Dinar Ayustine won her first match as she overcame India’s Sai Chukka, 21-7, 12-21, 21-18 and now meets Singapore’s Jia Yeo.

But India’s Rasika Raje created an upset as she beat Indonesia’s second seed Lyanny Mainaky 21-19, 21-15 in their first round match.

Canada’s third seed Brittney Tam went through safely with a 21-11, 21-18 win over home player Smit Toshniwal.

The tournament is due to continue tomorrow.
