Team Europe lead Team World 3-1 after the opening day of the Laver Cup in Chicago, despite former world number ones Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic losing their doubles match against the United States’ Jack Sock and South Africa’s Kevin Anderson.

Swiss Federer and Serbian Djokovic, who have 34 Grand Slam titles between them, were beaten, 6-7 6-3, 10-6 as Sock, who is currently second in the men's doubles world rankings, and Anderson gave Team World their first point of the tournament at the United Center.

But it came after Team Europe had established a 3-0 lead from the trio of singles matches.

Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov firstly beat the US’s Frances Tiafoe 6-1, 6-4 before Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund defeated Sock 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.

There was also a win for Belgium's David Goffin, who overcame Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman 6-4, 4-6, 11-9.

Federer had managed to win on his first appearance alongside Spain’s Rafael Nadal in doubles last year, but there was to be no repeat in his much-anticipated debut with Djokovic.

The pair’s rustiness in the four-man format was apparent as early as the third game, when Wimbledon and US Open champion Djokovic drilled a ball into his illustrious partner’s back, prompting embarrassed laughter all around.

And despite the star-studded pairing winning the opening set, the combination of Anderson’s power with Sock’s prowess as a three-time Grand Slam doubles champion proved too much in the end.

Action in Chicago is due to continue tomorrow with the singles matches seeing Germany’s Alexander Zverev face the US’s John Isner, Federer meet Australia’s Nick Kyrgios and Djokovic go up against Anderson.

Dimitrov and Goffin will then do battle with Sock and Kyrgios in the doubles.
