Australian Taekwondo have joined forces with martial arts blog The Mortal Mouse to help get more women into the sport.

In an announcement posted on Facebook, the national governing body said they would work with the blog - which is run by Australian taekwondo athlete Kirsty Hitchens - to offer a one year "pink belt" scholarship.

The initiative will be funded by donations made via the crowdfunding platform Chuffed.org, with the scholarship set to cover all expenses for the winner including fees, uniform and equipment.

"As martial artists we truly understand the profound life benefits this kind of training can provide for someone," Australian Taekwondo said in their statement.

"Also as martial artists, we are committed to helping others."

Scholarship recipients will be selected by a panel convened by The Mortal Mouse and Australian Taekwondo and assessed on a basis of need.

The Mortal Mouse was created by Hitchens to encourage more people into taekwondo and to inspire people to take up something new.

She took up the sport shortly after turning 40, after watching her son train for five years.
