The 2018 Pacific-Asia Curling Championships began in South Korea today, with the highlight of the session seeing the hosts come up against China in a repeat of last year’s gold medal match.

China went behind in the match at the venue which hosted the Olympic curling tournament in February early on when they blanked in the opening end before giving up a steal of two points in the second.

They redeemed themselves in the third however, scoring four points to take a 4-2 lead.

After eight ends the score was 8-8, but China’s captain Qiang Zou then scored two points in the ninth to take an 8-6 lead, before the win was sealed in the 10th.

“It was the first game for us and we had some good communication through our sweeping so we made some good shots,” Zou said afterwards.

“The ice is good and the curl is good so we made a lot of big shots today.

“Everything is good and we can now prepare for the next game.”

Chinese Taipei also began with a win as they overcame Qatar 10-3 to get their competition off to a good start.

“A win is good, it’s a long week, so one win doesn’t win the Championship,” their captain Randolph Shen.

“We made some mistakes, we’ll learn from them moving forward and hopefully improve every game.”

Also during the session, Japan beat Australia 7-3 and Hong Kong saw off Kazakhstan 7-4.

The event continues tomorrow.
