Xu Xin had a day to remember at the International Table Tennis Federation Austrian Open as he won the mixed doubles title and booked his place in the men's singles final.

The world number two partnered Chinese team-mate Liu Shiwen in the mixed event at the TipsArena in Linz.

Despite both players winning Olympic team gold medals at Rio 2016, the Chinese duo were unseeded and faced the top-ranked Chien-An Chen and Ching I-Cheng of Chinese Taipei in the final.

In a thrilling contest, the China duo won 9-11, 11-6, 11-9, 10-12, 11-5.

Before the final, second seed Xu needed to negotiate his men's singles quarter final 6-11, 17-15, 11-9, 11-5, 10-12, 11-9 over Japan's Tomokazu Harimoto.

That set-up a semi-final clash with England's Liam Pitchford, who won his last eight clash yesterday, and Xu again came through 11-9, 11-7, 11-7, 11-6.

His opponent in tomorrow's final at the World Tour platinum competition will be compatriot Jingkung Liang who stunned China's world number one Fan Zhendong.

Fan, the top seed won the Swedish Open last week, was beaten 10-12, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-9.

In women's singles action, four Chinese players made the last four.

Top seed and world number one Zhu Yuling did not make it through as she went down to fifth seed Chen Meng, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 8-11, 7-11, 11-6.

Sixth seed Wang Manyu made the final by beating non-ranked Zhuojia He, 11-5, 9-11, 11-7, 11-2, 11-8.

Wang also beat Ding Ning, China's reigning world and Olympic champion and second seed, yesterday.
