Schoolchildren in Callao, Peru were treated to a day of sporting and educational activities which aimed to promote the values of the Pan American Games which will be held in Lima next year.

The Lima 2019 Organising Committee hope to demonstrate a commitment to staging more than just a major sporting event, by using the Games as an educational tool for children.

A team from Lima 2019 visited the school in the Callao area which will hold sports such as volleyball, taekwondo and goalball at the Games.

Lima 2019 say this visit is one of many school activities they will be arranging in the run-up to the event.

The Ministry of Education in Peru and the Peruvian Sports Institute has endorsed the educational and social campaigns carried out by Lima 2019 within the framework of the "top Peru athletes in schools" project.

The campaigns aim to promote sport as well as the values like teamwork, discipline and friendship that accompany it.

One of the project's slogans is "more sport, less violence" which course director Gloria Ruiz Sarmiento supports.

"I think it's excellent that our children can see that through the values of sport you can achieve very positive things, and that not everything in El Callao is crime, violence, because that's generally what they hear on the news," she said.

With Lima 2019 set to begin on July 26 next year, the Callao area is currently being revitalised as one of the host cities.

The Regional Sports Village is being refurbished, the Miguel Grau Coliseum is being remodelled and a new Sports Centre is being built.
