English boxers assured themselves of a medal at the European Union Boxing Championships in Valladolid, Spain tonight as they earned places in the semi-finals at all three weights contested.

Benjamin Whittaker was the first qualifier, beating  Scotland’s Sean Lazzerini on a 5-0 judges’ verdict to go through to the last four in the 81 kilogram light heavyweight class.

In the 91kg heavyweight category, Whittaker’s team-mate Cheavon Clarke prevailed by the same margin in his bout with Scotland’s Scot Forrest.

The third victorious Englishman on the night was Frazer Clarke, who won his +91kg super heavyweight fight against Poland’s Aleksander Stawirej by a 5-0 verdict.

Romania and Croatia assured themselves of two medals in the evening session of the sixth day of action.

The Romanian winners were Andrei Aradoie, who beat Austria’s Umar Dzambekov 4-1 in the 81kg class, and Cristian Filip, who earned a 3-2 verdict over Fnlan’s Krenar Aliu in the 91kg category.

Croatia had success through Toni Filipi, who beat Ireland’s Kirill Afanasyev 5-0 in the 91kg class, and Marko Milun, who defeated Moldova’s Alexei Zavatin in the +91kg class.

Elsewhere, home boxer Ayoub Ghadfa beat Clemente Russo of Italy 5-0 in the +9ikg, and was joined in the semi-finals by Bulgaria’s Peter Belberov, a 4-1 winner over Georgia’s Giorgi Tchigladze.

Italy’s Abbes Mouhiidine beat home boxer Steven Satipo 5-0 in the 91kg category.

In the 81kg class, Slovakia’s Matus Strnisko beat Greece’s Polyneikis Kalamaras 5-0, and France’s Gaetan Ntambwe defeated Belgium’s Ziad El Mohor, with the referee stopping the contest in the second round.

The previous day’s quarter-finals had been a similar story of success for England.

Callum French moved through to the last four of the 60kg lightweight class, where he will meet Italy’s Francesco Maietta,

And 22-year-old Luke McCormack produced a sound technical performance to beat Georgia’s EUBC European U22 Champion Lasha Guruli and earn a meeting with Moldova’s experienced Dmitri Galagot.

Luke’s twin brother Pat, a Rio 2016 Olympian, continued his winning path in the quarter-finals of the welterweight 69kg class, beating Georgia’s EUBC European U22 Champion Eskerkhan Madiev to earn a semi-final against Ireland’s Kieran Molloy, who eliminated Italy’s Youth Olympic Games winner Vincenzo Arecchia.

Spain’s first guaranteed medallist was Rio 2016 Olympian Youba Ndiaye Sissokho, in the welterweight 69kg class, who will now face Poland’s newcomer Filip Wachala.

This European Boxing Confederation event is the main competition for the men’s elite boxers in 2018 and 124 of the continent’s top boxers have arrived to contest the medals.

The first edition of the EUBC European Union Boxing Championships was held in Strasbourg, France in 2003.
