Rob Pettifer has been named by Swimming Canada as the head coach for pool swimming at next year's Pan American Games in Lima.

Pettifer is currently head coach of the Vancouver-based Richmond Rapids Swim Club, where he has developed several stars such as Canadian Paralympian Jonathan Dieleman and 2016 World Championship Canadian team member Nicolaas Dekker.

He has previously been an apprentice coach to the National Development Team during the 2015 Mare Nostrum Tour.

"I like to take the time to think things through and do my research," Pettifer said of his coaching methods.

"That’s from relay selection, to environment, travel, to the athletes, the personal touch of who they are, where they’re going and how to get them there."

The 2019 Pan American Games are due to take place from July 26 to August 11, with the swimming events on August 6 to 10.

The Canadian Swimming Trials, scheduled to be held from April 3 to 7 in Toronto, will determine the Canadian team for the Games.

Canada won eight golds, 11 silver and nine bronze swimming medals when they hosted the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, finishing third in the swimming medal table behind neighbours the United States and Brazil.
