Italy’s Giulia Capocci secured a place in the semi-finals of the Wheelchair Tennis Masters in Orlando as the round robin stage drew to a close.

Capocci was hoping to overcome Britain’s Lucy Shuker to aid her effort to finish in second place in Group A of the women’s event at the USTA National Campus and battled to a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win.

Her place was sealed when Germany’s Sabine Ellerbrock suffered a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Diede de Groot, the Dutch player completing an unbeaten group stage.

The Netherlands’ Aniek van Koot also overcame her compatriot Marjolein Buis 6-4, 6-3 to book her place in the semi-finals.

She finished second in Group A, with Japan’s Yui Kamiji advancing in first place.

Japan’s Shingo Kunieda earned a place in the men’s semi-finals, top seed beating Gordon Reid 6-3, 6-2.

The result ended Reid’s hopes of reaching the last four.

Kunieda joined Sweden’s Stefan Olsson in qualifying from Group A of the men’s singles event.

Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez maintained his 100 per cent record by beating France’s Stephane Houdet 6-3, 6-3 in Group B.

Belgium’s Joachim Gerard will advance in second place should he beat Japan’s Takashi Sanada in the second Group B match of the day.

Top men’s quad seed David Wagner missed out on a semi-final place, following the American’s loss to Andy Lapthorne of Britain yesterday.

Lapthorne lost 6-3, 6-4 to South Africa’s Lucas Sithole today, with the duo advancing to the semi-finals at Wagner’s expense.

Lapthorne is scheduled to face Japan’s Koji Sugeno in the semi-finals, while Sithole will take on Australia’s Dylan Alcott.
