Next year's International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine World Ski Championships in Åre have been certified based on the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 20121 standard for sustainable events.

The event, due to take place in the Swedish resort from February 4 to 17, was audited by the Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE) and has been certified based on ISO 20121, the international standard for managing sustainable events.

Organisers had pledged in June 2017 to make the competition fossil fuel free.

Securing the ISO 20121 certification means that Åre 2019 has met all the prerequisites to carry out a sustainable event and now enables organisers to implement sustainable working methods.

"The standard has helped us ensure that across our organization we work consequently and in structured fashion toward the sustainability goals we have set ourselves such as being the first Fossil Fuel Free World Championships ever," Niklas Carlsson, chief executive of Åre 2019, said.

"It also provides us handy tools to engage our suppliers, cooperation partners and other stakeholders and activate them in the work toward meeting our sustainability goals."

With the Championships expected to attract 120,000 visitors to Åre and reach 700 million viewers on TV, RISE considers the event to be an important platform to increase awareness about sustainability and the environment.

Åre is due to stage most of the Alpine skiing, freestyle skiing and snowboard medal events if Stockholm's bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games is successful, even though it is located 400 miles northwest of the Swedish capital.

Other ISO 20121 certified events include the Olympic Games in London and UEFA Euro 2016 in France.
