India's Pusarla V Sindhu won a repeat of last year's final as she beat  Japan's Akane Yamaguchi on the opening day of the Badminton World Federation World Tour Finals in Guangzhou.

Sindhu, the Olympic silver medallist at Rio 2016, produced an impressive display to record a 24-22, 21-15 victory in the Group A contest at the Tianhe Gymnasium.

The Indian player had trailed 18-13 in the first game before rallying to take the opener, which proved crucial in determining the outcome of the match.

She then held off the advances of Yamaguchi in the second game to partially avenge the defeat she suffered to the World Championships bronze medallist in the title decider at the corresponding event in 2017.

"It’s important to start well in the group stage," said Sindhu.

"I was nervous towards the end of the first game but, once I won that game, I played better."
