Martin Fuchs triumphed in front of a home crowd at the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Jumping World Cup Western European League leg in Basel.

The Swiss rider produced a clear run in the opening round at St. Jakobshalle on his horse Clooney.

Clear runs proved a challenge for his rivals to achieve, with only The Netherlands' Marc Houtzager and Belgium's Pieter Devos replicating Fuchs' feat.

Fuchs would emerge as the winner in the following jump-off, as he achieved a time of 37.61sec after going clear again.

He would finish in front of Houtzager who also achieved another clear round but ended in a slower time of 38.84.

A mistake proved costly for Devos, with the Belgian receiving a four point penalty to end his chances of victory.

He was forced to settle for third place.

"He was a bit fresh and spooky in the first round and the short time-allowed didn't make it any easier," said Fuchs.

"I was just inside time which was a bit lucky.

"I saw the riders going before me and I discussed what to do with Steve Guerdat and my dad."

World number one Guerdat was only able to place 10th in front of a home crowd.

The London 2012 gold medallist remains at the top of the FEI Jumping World Cup Western European League standings on 65 points.

His advantage has been narrowed to just a solitary point by Devos.

Following his victory, Fuchs rose to third place on 55 points.

The League is set to continue next week in Germany.
