The reigning Olympic champion converted her considerable first run lead to continue her superb start to the campaign, clocking a combined time of 2min 04.75 sec.

Shiffrin was comfortably quicker than the rest of the field, finishing 1.21sec faster than Tessa Worley of France.

Worley, the reigning world champion, was second ahead of Italy's Marta Bassino, who moved up from fourth after the first run to claim third place.

Today's result moved Shiffrin, who is seeking her third consecutive overall World Cup title, to within four wins of the all-time record of 14 victories in a single season, set by Vreni Schneider of Switzerland in the 1988-1989 campaign.

It also saw the 23-year-old leapfrog Worley into top spot on the giant slalom standings.

Shiffrin now has 355 points, 10 more than her French rival.

"It's my first win on this piste," Shiffrin, who now has 53 World Cup victories to her name, told RAI. 

"Last year it wasn't great for me (with elimination in the first run) and I really wanted to make up for that.

"Today was great. 

"I was very aggressive on the first run, but I knew everyone would up their game on the second.

"That's what happened - I wanted to be a little more cautious, I was defending something. 

"Some turns were really good, but others just good."
