López beat Russia’s Magomedzagir Isaldibirov 8-4 in the men’s under-75 kilograms K44 final at the Antalya Arena.

Prior to that, he defeated Japan’s Shunsuke Kudo 12-2 in the semi-finals.

Also claiming an inaugural Para-taekwondo gold medal for her country on the world stage was Brazil's Débora Menezes, who overcame Uzbekistan's Guljonoy Naimova 7-3 in the women's over-58kg K44 final.

The bronze medallists were Japan's Shoko Ota and France's Laura Schiel.

Ota had earlier ended Great Britain's Amy Truesdale's hopes of winning a third world title, beating her 2-0 on golden point in the quarter-finals.

Taekwondo is due to make its Paralympic debut at Tokyo 2020. 

It was one of two sports added to the programme along with badminton.
