The European nation's trio of Carol Bouvard, Nicolas Gygax and Noe Roth upset the usual dominant nations of China, Russia and Belarus to triumph at Deer Valley.

Mixed team aerials is a new format and was making its World Championship bow before its Winter Olympic debut at Beijing 2022.

Nations pick three skiers and can opt for either two male or two female athletes.

The Swiss only had 31 World Cup starts and just one top 10 finish between them but topped the pile with a score of 303.08 in the final.

Gygax was their star performer, landing a back full, double full, full that earned him 121.68 points.

That was the highest individual score of the final with Roth tallying 107.69 and Bouvard 73.71.

"It's amazing," said Roth, who added to his bronze medal from the men's individual competition. 

"Switzerland hasn't had much success in past years at World Champs, but today we won. 

"It was super fun jumping today. 

"I didn't have a good training but in competition I was good. 

"It was a close battle tonight but we got it in the end. 

"I just did my jumps and hoped my team-mates could do theirs too and they did."

The Swiss were coached by Roth's father Michel and ensured China and Russia had to make do with silver and bronze respectively.

Women's individual bronze medallist Xu Mengtao combined with Sun Jiaxu and Wang Xindi to win silver in 297.82.

Men's individual champion Maxim Burov helped Russia to bronze with Liubov Nikitina and Stanislav Nikitin, ending on 296.74.

Women's individual winner Aliaksandra Ramanouskaya had to be content with fourth place as Belarus scored 272.15.

The event went ahead as Australia's Sochi 2014 Olympic silver medallist David Morris agreed to one final competition, appearing alongside Laura Peel and Britt George.

It meant the event could progress as the minimum number of teams had been reached.

The Australians ended in seventh place.

Qualification was also held today in the skiing halfpipe competitions, with reigning Olympic champions David Wise and Cassie Sharpe leading the way.

Wise, the Olympic gold medallist at both Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018, scored 92.00 for hosts United States as 10 skiers reached the final.

Canada's Sharpe, also the Pyeongchang 2018 winner, scored 93.20 to lead eight women into their final.

Sharpe is looking for a first world title, while Wise won the global event in 2013.

Gold medals will be decided in Utah tomorrow in moguls and snowboard halfpipe.
