Two-time Paralympic silver medallist Omar Sami Hamadeh Qarada was among a trio of winner as action begun today at the Fazza 2019 World Para Powerlifting World Cup in Dubai.

The 37-year-old Jordanian managed a best lift of 165 kilograms with his first attempt to win the men’s up to 49kg event at the Dubai Club for People of Determination.

Azerbaijan’s Parvin Mammadov finished second with 145kg and Brazil’s Joao Maria Franca Junior came third with 144kg.

In the men’s up to 54kg competition, Egypt’s Taha Abdelmagid prevailed with a best lift of 166kg.

Greece’s Dimitrios Bakochristos had to settle for the silver medal after posting the same mark and the top three was completed by Brazil’s Bruno Carra, the bronze medallist with 161kg.

The one women’s event held today saw Syria’s Noura Baddour claim the up to 41kg title with a best lift of 82kg.

Algeria’s Guerioua Samira ranked second with 78kg, beating Brazil’s Lara Aparecida de Lima to the silver medal by a margin of 5kg.

Action in Dubai is due to continue tomorrow with the men’s up to 59kg and up to 65kg categories, and the women’s up to 45kg, up to 50kg and up to 55kg divisions.
