The Championships took place over two weeks in Åre, with action drawing to a close yesterday.

King Carl XVI Gustaf and HM Queen Silvia visited the International Ski Federation (FIS) competition.

The latter offered her public support to hosting the Winter Olympics in an interview with TV4 Sweden.

“We are old Olympic veterans, so to speak,” she said.

“And it’s important to show everybody what Sweden is about - especially now when Sweden and Stockholm want to host the Olympics.

“It’s very important to show your support.

“It would really be fantastic in 2026.”

Stockholm 2026 state the King and Queen of Swede have strong links to the Games, with Silvia Sommerlath having worked as a chief hostess at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.

While serving in the role she met then met the Swedish Crown Prince Carl Gustaf, who became King the following year.

The pair were married three years later.

Stockholm and Åre’s is battling for the 2026 hosting rights against Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo in Italy, although doubts over political support continue to cast a shadow on both bids.

The Swedish bid has faced uncertainty after a local Government reshuffle in October saw the Green Party and the centre-right Alliance parties join forces and declare the city would not host the Games.

The Swedish Olympic Committee has since claimed the majority of the Stockholm City Council are behind the joint candidacy, while a new national Government in the country could also be a factor.

Niklas Carlsson, chief executive of Åre 2019, has suggested the bid will be boosted by the Alpine Skiing World Championships.

“I am really proud of the organisation and of what we have achieved considering what we can and cannot control. I am especially proud of the people on the mountain; what they have done is just tremendous,” he said.

“We’ve had extremely challenging weather but we still succeeded in offering the athletes exceptional sporting conditions which was our mission.

“We only had to cancel one men’s downhill training while the best athletes based on this year’s World Cup results won medals.

“In sum, we have had very nice but challenging two weeks, which have proven us as a good organiser.

“Looking ahead, we’ve again gained great experience in major event organisation including developing a great base of human resources thanks to our 1,400 volunteers alone.

“This will certainly help us if and when we are awarded the right to host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games as part of the joint 2026 Stockholm-Åre bid.”

Organisers have claimed 102,000 people attended competitions at the Championships.

An additional 32,000 were asserted to have visited side events and ceremonies, which were held at a medal plaza.
