Apurvi Chandela earned home gold for India on the opening day of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in New Delhi.

The success came after the competition's start was overshadowed by two Pakistani athletes being refused visas to compete in India.

The decision to deny Ghulam Mustafa Bashir and Khalil Ahmed visas came in the wake of a Pakistani militant group claiming responsibility for a deadly suicide bombing in Pulwama in Kashmir on February 14, which killed 40 members of the Indian police force.

The International Olympic Committee responded by revoking the Olympic qualification status of the men's 25 metres rapid fire pistol event and said they would "suspend all discussions" with India regarding applications to host future competitions.

Shooting did begin today, however, with the success for the hosts at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range.

Chandela produced a world record in the women's 10m air rifle competition, as she ended the elimination stage of the event with a score of 252.9 points.

She finished clear of China's Zhao Ruozhu, who was forced to settle for second place despite an impressive total of 251.8.

The podium was completed by Xu Hong, with the Chinese shooter eliminated on a score of 230.4.

"Competing on my home turf added some extra pressure," Chandela said.

"At the same time, to hear them cheering gave me the motivation for a strong competition.

"I started shooting in 2008, after Abhinav Bindra's victory at the 2008 Olympic Games.

"My family always supported me, and they are a big part of my success.

"My mum was here, in the crowd, she always follows me.

"My aim is Tokyo 2020.

"The Games are the big dream.

"The road to Tokyo is still long, I won't stop here, there are many international competitions ahead of me before that."

With Chandela having already earned her country an Olympic quota place at last year's World Championship, Zhao and Xu were able to earn their country berths for Tokyo 2020.

Competition will continue tomorrow with three finals.

The men's 50m rifle three positions event will be followed by the men's 10m air pistol and women's 25m pistol competitions.
